Network Engineer

Gearbox's IT department is looking for an experienced IT Engineer with a solid understanding of networking and server systems. Responsibilities will revolve around day to day maintenance, upkeep of infrastructure, and deployment of new network technology, servers, and related services. This position will require you to be on call 24/7 for after hour needs and may include some heavy lifting of equipment. Advanced knowledge of a mixed network and OS environment is a must. This is a networking focused position, but also requires a jack-of-all-trades IT generalist who can handle different technology challenges.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, deploy, and maintain complex network solutions that are high performance and support company products in a 24/7 environment, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and other network communication and security solutions.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot a mixed OS, virtual and physical server environment.
  • Design and manage operations automation systems using commonly available and supportable tools.
  • Deliver on multiple projects and tasks as assigned by manager, communicating regularly on your progress.
  • Support a 24/7 production environment, including carrying an on-call mobile device.
  • Create and maintain high-quality documentation of all relevant systems and procedures.
  • Stay current on system and network security trends and make recommendations to correct deficiencies and improve the security of all computer systems.
  • Communicate effectively with management, co-workers and other business partners.
Required Skills:
  • Experience designing and supporting a switched Ethernet network and a robust wireless network, with an emphasis on performance and security.
  • Proven experience in implementing secure networks using firewalls, VPNs, and other common security tools.
  • Intermediate experience with Linux and Windows systems and related software including DNS, SMTP, SSH, shell scripting, Ruby and/or Perl, and Active Directory services.
  • Experience supporting 24/7, high availability Internet application environments that include web, application, database, and load balancing systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing common open source automation systems such as Puppet or Chef.
  • Proven success at managing monitoring solutions such as Nagios, Cacti, Zenoss, or Zabbix. Basic understanding of syslog, SNMP, and Windows event log is also required.
  • Understanding of Linux features including compiling, troubleshooting, memory management, tuning, I/O subsystem optimization, and security.
  • Hands-on, "get it done" attitude.
  • Work well as part of team in a fun, fast-paced environment.
