Server Engineer

Gearbox's IT department is looking for an experienced Server Engineer with a solid understanding of server and networking systems. Responsibilities will revolve around day to day maintenance, upkeep of infrastructure, and deployment of new servers, network technology, and related services. This position will require you to be on call 24/7 for after hour needs and may include some heavy lifting of equipment. Advanced knowledge of a mixed OS and network environment is a must. This is a server focused position, but also requires a jack-of-all-trades IT generalist who can handle different technology challenges.
Responsibilities:
- Design, deploy, and maintain a mixed OS, virtual and physical server environment that is high performance and supports company products in a 24x7 environment.
- Design and manage operations automation systems using commonly available and supportable tools.
- Deliver on multiple projects and tasks as assigned by manager, communicating regularly on your progress.
- Support a 24X7 production environment, including carrying an on-call mobile device.
- Create and maintain high-quality documentation of all relevant systems and procedures.
- Stay current on system and network security trends and make recommendations to correct deficiencies and improve the security of all computer systems.
- Communicate effectively with management, co-workers and other business partners.
Required Skills:
- Proven experience with Linux and Windows systems and related software including DNS, SMTP, shell scripting, Ruby and/or Perl, and Active Directory services.
- Experience supporting 24X7, high availability Internet application environments that include web, application, database, and load balancing systems.
- Proven success with monitoring solutions such as Zenoss, Nagios, Cacti, or Zabbix. Basic understanding of syslog, SNMP, and Windows event log is also required.
- Understanding of Linux features including compiling, troubleshooting, memory management, tuning, I/O subsystem optimization, and security.
- Support and configuration experience with SANs.

Experience with at least one of the following:
- Hosting services on Amazon, Rackspace, or other cloud provider.
- Managing common open source automation systems such as Puppet or Chef.
- Hands-on, "get it done" attitude.
- Work well as part of a team in a fun, fast-paced environment.
Desired Skills:
- Bonus points awarded if you possess hands-on experience with any of the following:
- Experience supporting a switched Ethernet network and a robust wireless network, with an emphasis on performance and security.
- Experience implementing secure networks using firewalls, VPNs, and other common security tools.
- MySQL or PostgreSQL
- Exchange 2010
- Revision control systems like Perforce or Git
- Microsoft OS deployment technologies
